In pre British days towards end of the Mughal rule in Avadh, which now constitutes two administrative divisions known as Lucknow and Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, a sophisticated culture sprang up no doubt inspired by the powerful ruling Nawab's. Although the rule of the Nawabs was a short lived one and it ended when Wajid Ali Shah 1847-56 was deposed by Lord Dalhouise in 1856, the culture of Lucknow continued whose traces says the author, still linger in some lanes and by lanes of Lucknow. This culture emanated from the life style of the Nawabs. Hence the title of the book Palace Culture of Lucknow. Although this culture may be considered as a hot house plant its beauty and grace inspired the urban people and thereby their cultural activities such as their food drinks and dress as well as their literature and fine arts. The book tells the story of this culture in nine chapter. Written though not for the specialists in sociology and history, it would be certainly read by them if they want first hand information about Lucknow and its culture, because the book is first of its kind. To the general reader, it has an appeal because Lucknow and its culture have an universal appeal. (jacket) [New Delhi, India] [Publication Year: 2012]
