Description: ISBN10: 1869400143, ISBN13: 9781869400149, [publisher: Auckland University Press, Auckland] Hardcover Prior to 1891 the NZ Parliament was not a political party-based administration, but the election of 1890 was to change this with the Liberal Party being the major force in the new Parliament and thus it became the governing party. The Liberals remained in power until 1912, during which time many important, social, commercial, economic, infrastructure and welfare advances were made, and largely followed and enhanced by subsequent administrations. The dominant personality of the Liberal years was Richard Seddon, popularly known as "King Dick" and the his death in 1906 ended his premiership and began the decline of the Party. However, the long period in office of the Liberals (1891-1912) introduced a general tendancy for NZ to have administrations in power for considerable terms. Hamer's account of the Liberal's 21 year rule is an important addition to NZ political literature covering as it doese the major personalities and the policies they introduced during that time. First edition of 1988, 418 pages including two appendices, refrences, bibliography and index, 39 b/w illustrations, mainly photos, including portraits.
