by Richard Dawkins
Price: USD 96.47
Dealer: AbebooksUK, Orlando Booksellers
Description: ISBN10: 019857519X, ISBN13: 9780198575191, [publisher: Oxford University Press (OUP), Walton Street, Oxford, OX2 6DP] Hardcover First Edition A fourth printing of the first edition - reprinted with corrections in 1978. The book was first published in 1976, and reprinted with corrections the same year, with a third printing in 1977. ***A very good copy in black cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or tears to the cloth. No creasing. Corners sharp. The page block edges don't have the usual foxing. Internally the book is also very good, with the ink stamp of the Eugenics Library and ink reference number on the front free endpaper (please see scans). No other marks or annotations. Pages clean. No creases or tears. There is also no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good dustwrapper, with the fabulous wraparound surrealistic illustration taken from the painting 'The Expectant Valley' by Desmond Morris. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips or tears, but has been neatly price-clipped by the publisher, with a revised printed price of £3.50 net on the front flap. There is only minimal rubbing and creasing at the extremities, mainly at the tips of the foldovers. There is some light fading to the colours on the spine, which is common with this book. There is also a light crease to the top corner of the front flap. Dustwrapper bright. ***224 pages including a Bibliography, Index and Key to bibliography at the back of the book. 222mm x 140mm. ***'Richard Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme. With his book "The Extended Phenotype" (1982), he introduced into evolutionary biology the influential concept that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not necessarily limited to an organism's body, but can stretch far into the environment. In 2006, he founded the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. "The Selfish Gene" is a 1976 book on evolution by the ethologist Richard Dawkins, in which the author builds upon the principal theory of George C. Williams's "Adaptation and Natural Selection" (1966). Dawkins uses the term "selfish gene" as a way of expressing the gene-centred view of evolution (as opposed to the views focused on the organism and the group), popularising ideas developed during the 1960s by W. D. Hamilton and others. From the gene-centred view, it follows that the more two individuals are genetically related, the more sense (at the level of the genes) it makes for them to behave cooperatively with each other.' (Wiki) ***'Four thousand million years ago molecules with the power to make copies of themselves first appeared in the sea. What was the fate of these ancient replicators? They did not die out: they are masters of the survival arts. But do not look for them floating loose in the sea; they gave up that cavalier freedom long ago. Now they swarm in huge colonies, safe inside gigantic lumbering robots, manipulating the outside world by remote control. They are in all of us; they created us, body and mind; and their preservation is the sole reason for our existence. They have come a long way, those replicators. Now they go by the name of genes, and we are their survival machines.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A fourth printing of Richard Dawkins' first published book, published with corrections and reprinted with a new publisher's price. Probably the most famous work of genetic science. An unusual copy - this is the only re-priced fourth printing that we have handled, and interesting to have come from the Eugenics Library. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. [Lincoln, United Kingdom] [Publication Year: 1978]

The book was first published in 1976. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. No bumps or tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. 38. THE SELFISH GENE (First edition - third printing in near fine condition)
by Richard Dawkins
Price: USD 160.78
Dealer: AbebooksUK, Orlando Booksellers
Description: ISBN10: 019857519X, ISBN13: 9780198575191, [publisher: Oxford University Press (OUP), Walton Street, Oxford, OX2 6DP] Hardcover First Edition A third printing of the first edition - reprinted with corrections in 1977. The book was first published in 1976, and reprinted with corrections the same year, and in this printing in 1977. ***A near fine copy in black cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or tears to the cloth. No creasing. Corners sharp. The page block edges don't have the usual foxing, just a few small spots to the bottom edge. Internally the book is also near fine with no inscriptions or other annotations. Pages clean. No creases or tears. There is also no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In an unusually near fine dustwrapper, with the fabulous wraparound surrealistic illustration taken from the painting 'The Expectant Valley' by Desmond Morris. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2,95 net. The dustwrapper is complete, with virtually no rubbing or creasing at the edges, even on the spine - just a tiny loss of surface colour on the fore-edge of the front foldover edge. No chips or tears. Very unusually also, there is virtually none of the usual fading to the colour on the spine. The white inner flaps are slightly browned at the edges, otherwise the dustwrapper is bright and clean. ***224 pages including a Bibliography, Index and Key to bibliography at the back of the book. 222mm x 140mm. ***'Richard Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme. All three printings from 1976-77 are rarely found in this near fine condition. The book is prone to a reading lean, and the jacket is nearly always either torn, chipped or spine-faded. This is a wonderful copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. [Lincoln, United Kingdom] [Publication Year: 1977]

Description: ISBN10: 019857519X, ISBN13: 9780198575191, [publisher: Oxford University Press (OUP), Walton Street, Oxford, OX2 6DP] Hardcover First Edition A first printing of the true first edition, published in 1976. The book was soon reprinted with corrections in the same year, and again in 1977 and this first printing is quite scarce now. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards, however, are quite worn at the edges, with some wear and discolouration to the fore-edge of the back board in particular. The corners are softened and rubbed but not bumped. There is a light vertical reading crease to the spine. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Top edge and fore-edge of page block foxed, but not much affecting the interior pages. Internally the book is very good, with a contemporary ownership name and date on the front free endpaper. No creases or tears, but there is some staining affecting the fore-edge of the last couple of pages. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good dustwrapper, with the striking surrealistic wraparound illustration taken from the painting 'The Expectant Valley' by Desmond Morris. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2.95 net, and is largely complete, but there is a triangular chip at the top of the back panel near the spine. There is also quite a bit of creasing and wear to the edges, with a small closed tear at the bottom edge of the back panel. There is also some slight fading to the colour on the spine, otherwise the dustwrapper is bright and clean. (Please see scans) ***224 pages including a Bibliography, Index and Key to bibliography at the back of the book. 222mm x 140mm. ***'Richard Dawkins FRS FRSL (born 26 Mar 1941) is a British evolutionary biologist and author. With his book "The Extended Phenotype" (1982), he introduced into evolutionary biology the influential concept that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not necessarily limited to an organism's body, but can stretch far into the environment. Now they go by the name of genes, and we are their survival machines.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A true first printing of this most famous work of genetic science, in the original dustwrapper. Richard Dawkins' first published book. Although this is quite a worn example of the book, the work is scarce now in the first printing. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. [Lincoln, United Kingdom] [Publication Year: 1976]

Dealer: Abebooks, Sekkes Consultants
Description: ISBN10: 019857519X, ISBN13: 9780198575191, [publisher: Oxford University Press, New York] Hardcover First Edition Book on evolution by the ethologist Richard Dawkins, in which the author builds upon the principal theory of George C. Williams's Adaptation and Natural Selection (1966). Dawkins uses the term "selfish gene" as a way of expressing the gene-centred view of evolution (as opposed to the views focused on the organism and the group). The book also introduces the term meme for a unit of human cultural evolution analogous to the gene, suggesting that such "selfish" replication may also model human culture, in a different sense. Memetics has become the subject of many studies since the publication of the book. Dust jacket has a few small closed tears and some wear at the edges. Now protected in Brodart. First printing. 5¾" - 8½". [North Dighton, MA, U.S.A.] [Publication Year: 1976]

This imaginative, powerful, and stylistically brilliant work not only brought the insights of Neo-Darwinism to a wide audience, but galvanized the biology community, generating much debate and stimulating whole new areas of research. Forty years later, its insights remain as relevant today as on the day it was published. EB; 8vo 8"-9" tall; 224 pages.
