New York, NY: St Martin's/Marek, Date: 1983. 1st Stated Signed Ed. Inscribed to original owners inside front cover by author, dated 1983. Hardbound. 8vo. 117 Pgs.. Fine in Good DJ/Good. The Redemption of the Unwanted by Abram L Sachar. Published by St Martin's/Marek, New York, NY, 1983. 1st Stated Signed Edition. Hardbound. Paper DJ. Size 8vo (up to 9-1/2'' tall). Condition: Fine in Good DJ. Inscribed to original owners inside front cover by author, dated 1983. 334 Pgs. ISBN 0312667299. LCCN 83-3025. From the Liberation of the Death Camps to the Founding of Israel. Placed in DP camps almost as soon as they were ''freed,'' utterly unwanted in any of the countries they had once called home, spurned by a distracted Roosevelt, despised by the British government, it quickly became apparent that they needed their own land. Palestine was the logical place, but the Arabs did not want them there and the British came to the Arabs' aid in forcibly keeping the Jews out. So passports were forged, passage clandestinely arranged; incredible acts of human courage became daily events. And, despite overwhelming opposition (but with the support of Harry Truman), the state of Israel was formed. Drawing on restricted documents and scores of interviews, the author tells a story of government perfidy and individual heroism. Description text copyright 2011 BooksForComfort. Item ID 24967. 1983. New York: St. Martin's / Marek, Date: 1983. Previous owner's name. Bright, clean, square, tight, unmarked copy. Sharp corners. No remainder mark. Not a Book Club edition. Not price clipped (19.95). From the Dust Jacket: "At the end of World War II, there were only 400,000 Jews left alive in western Europe. Some had lived through the ordeal of the concentration camps; some had remained hidden throughout the war. Most were malnourished; disease of the body and the mind was rampant... This book is a master historian's account of what happened to the survivors." Includes descriptions of extermination camp conditions at the time of liberation, aspects of the Nuremberg Trial, illegal Jewish immigration to Palestine, government perfidy, individual heroism, etc. "Stimulating, informative, meaningful - Abram Sachar's account of what happened to the survivors after the end of World War II magnificently combines the historian's and philospher's quest for truth... For the survivors, the tragedy did not end with the war. To see how they coped with the new phase of their lives you must read this very important book." - Elie Wiesel. Inscribed and dated by the author on fep. Inscribed to Herb Cohen-- believed to be the renown expert on negotiations. Abram Leon Sachar (1899 - 1993) was an American historian and founding president of Brandeis University. Sachar published his first book in 1927; this was followed by several other books in quick succession. He also lectured across the country from the 1920s to the 1990s, and appeared in a weekly educational television lecture show, The Course of Our Times; his analyses of problems in contemporary history were later published in the book of the same title. Sachar remained a working educator, historian, lecturer, and author until his death. During World War II, Sachar worked as a radio news analyst in Chicago and New York, commenting on contemporary affairs. He was also involved with attempts to aid Jewish refugees, organizing a program to bring refugee students to the U. S. Derived from a Kirkus review: Sachar begins with a brief survey of 1945 conditions in each of the liberated concentration-camps and death-camps--mixing statistics with anecdotes of Nazi acts, survivor endurance, and Holocaust horror. Then, he moves back in time to offer a catalogue of Jewish resistance to the Nazis. Next comes a parallel catalogue of Christian compassion ...
