ISBN10: 0718124499, ISBN13: 9780718124496, [publisher: Michael Joseph Ltd, London] Hardcover First Edition First edition, first impression. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine slightly faded, corners slightly bruised, price clipped, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 295pp. Little Grey Rabbit, Sam Pig and Brown Fox are just some of the characters created in children's books by Alison Uttley (1884-1976). But who was the real woman who spun these enchanting tales of country lore and friendship? Born and raised in an idyllic rural setting, Uttley gathered much of the inspiration for her stories from the fond memories of her childhood and love of the countryside. However, her life was to prove far more complex than the humble beginnings of a country girl had shown. She had a strong personality with a character full of contradiction, sometimes kindly, thoughtful and loving, a provider of merry company and stimulating friendship, but also domineering, scornful, harsh, calculating and she pursued several vicious literary feuds. Alison Uttley's husband James Uttley was prone to depression and drowned himself in the River Mersey in 1930. In 1978, two years after his mother's death, her only son John Corin Uttley, also killed himself by driving over a cliff. Biographer Denis Judd had access to Uttley's diaries.
