He then goes back in time to the twenties to consider Carpentier's relationship in the Latin American avant-garde, his role in founding of the Afro-Antillian movement, and his involvement with the Surrealist group in Paris. After examining Carpentier's most productive period -- the forties -- he treats the two autobiographical novels of the nineteen fifties. His final chapter discusses Carpentier's production since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution."
