The General Editor of the series, Professor Jack Simmons of the University of Leicester, has prefixed to them a brief introduction which surveys the development of the writing of county history from its origins in the sixteenth century down to our own time. The essays are on Robert Thoroton, James Wright, Sir Robert Atkyns, William Borlase, John Hutchins, Joseph Nicolson and Richard Burn, Edward Hasted, and Sir Richard Worsley and are printed in chronological order in which the books were originally published, from 1677 to 1781.
