Taped to the inside front cover is a full page handwritten note on Updike's stationary dated Dec 20. It starts out "Dear Adam. I was happy to see Tom and your mother, at a sad occasion, and to hear a little bit about you. The last I knew, you were standing on the streets of Rome talking fluent Italian with the local roughnecks." Approximately 135 words completely in his hand on a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2" sheet.
