As Organist and Master of the Choristers at Chichester Cathedral, Dr Birch (working with Chichester's Dean Walter Hussey) commissioned new choral works for the Cathedral Choir from several composers including Lennox Berkeley, who is the Lennox in the title of this book. Freda is Freda Bernstein, who Lennox met in the BBC Music Department. She was 20 years younger than him, and after she became pregnant, he married her in the winter of 1946. This was an event which caused some astonishment, as (for example) Lennox had previously lived with Benjamin Britten as his partner, and indicated that he could never make love to a woman. What happened? He adored her, they shared a bed one night in a spare room, "a bit small for both", and as Tony Scotland puts it, he "responded to the heat of the moment". They went on to have two more children. As this snippet alone illustrates, Lennox Berkeley had an interesting life, described in this well-researched book in considerable detail.
