ISBN10: 0850527600, ISBN13: 9780850527605, [publisher: Leo Cooper, London] Hardcover Sub-titled "The U-Boat Wars 1916-1945" John Terrain's book is arguably the most comprehensive and objective study of the development and effects of German submarine campaigns in both world wars and of the counter-tactics adopted by the Allied nations. Such is the depth, detail, quality of writing and extent of research that "Business in Great Waters" may well be the definitive work on the subject and in particular of WWII's "Battle of the Atlantic," of which Winston Churchill said in his war-time memorirs that the only thing that "really frightened me was the U-boat peril." The author linked the submarine operations of the two world wars as he considered one was vitrually a continuation of the other. WWI was the first conflict in which the submarine was a major factor, with the technology of that era basically carried over the the second. However, the book covers comprehensivly the advances in submarine science, the development of electronic devices and of the weapons deployed both offensively and defensively. As befits the extent of the author's coverage the book is a massive read, but one that constantly holds the reader's attention while exploring every aspect of what was one of the pivotal "battles" of WWII, which lasted from the first day of hostilities to the last and took a terrible toll of ships and men. ...

A very good clean copy with only minor shelf wear and a small mark to the front paste down. 1.45kg for outside NZ. Twice within 25 years Britain was threatened with starvation by the menace of the U-Boat. In this study of submarine warfare, the author explains why Winston Churchill wrote "the only thing that ever frightened me during the war was the U-Boat peril". Until it had been overcome, the Anglo-American entry into Europe in 1944 would have been impossible. John Terraine concentrates on the combatants themselves, both German and Allied, but does not overlook the three main factors in the equation - the political, the military and the technological, as well as the intelligence, the weapons and the devices both sides employed in order to outwit each other. He also focuses on the fighting men on either side, seeing the action from "where it was at".Google Books 1989. Leo Cooper ISBN 0850527600 9780850527605 [NZ]
