In seinem Vorwort erzählt Bert Stern vom Zustandekommen und Verlauf dieses ungewöhnlichen Phototermins. Seit der ersten Ausgabe von 1982 sind immer wieder einzelne verloren geglaubte oder verschollene Bilder des »Last Sitting« entdeckt worden. Sie in diese Neuauflage zu integrieren war aus rechtlichen Gründen nicht möglich.
