Inscription FLEP, Pages 358 & 383 display neat, clean, red underlining (pertaining to Nixon), else content appears as new and unblemished with fine cream/black boards in DJ displaying minor surface/edge wear, as shown. Slight bump at head of spine.Kirkus Review: Further evidence that good editors do not necessarily make good writers.Bradlee is, of course, the now-retired, legendary editor of the Washington Post, the man who took the paper from Sputnik to Watergate to Iran-Contra and beyond. Yet of this important work we learn little; we are instead treated to truisms like, "A newspaper is not referred to as `the daily miracle' for nothing.'' Bradlee is candid about having been scooped by the New York Times on the Pentagon papers and the role that scooping had on the Post's devotion to Watergate: "We found ourselves in the humiliating position of having to rewrite the competition.'' But his other remarks on coverage of Watergate affair, in which his coordination was crucial, are mostly unhelpful; there is little to learn from his cheerleading: "You really haven't been interviewed until you have sat across from Woodward and Bernstein. Bob with his square, all-American midwestern 4-H friendliness disguising, for the most part, the relentless determination that is his trademark. Carl, with his Hippy, conspiratorial, Rolling Stone exterior disguising his inventive, intuitive, analytical technique.'' There is no news here, especially not ...

New York Simon & Schuster 1995 First Printing Hardcover Bill O'Leary (Jacket Photograph) Very good in Good jacket 25 cm. 514 pages. Illustrations. Index. Front DJ flap price clipped. Some soiling to DJ. Inscribed by the author. Benjamin Crowninshield Bradlee (August 26, 1921-October 21, 2014) was an American newspaperman. He was the executive editor of The Washington Post from 1968 to 1991. He became a national figure during the presidency of Richard Nixon, when he challenged the federal government over the right to publish the Pentagon Papers and oversaw the publication of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's stories documenting the Watergate scandal. At his death he held the title of vice president at-large of The Washington Post. He was also an advocate for education and the study of history, including working for years as an active trustee on the boards of several major educational, historical, and archeological research institutions This is the witty, candid story of a daring man who made his own way to the heights of American journalism and public life, of the adventure that took him at only twenty years old straight from Harvard to almost four years in the shooting war in the South Pacific, and back, from a maverick New Hampshire weekly to an apprenticeship for Newsweek in postwar Paris, then to a Bureau chief's desk, and finally to the apex of his career at The Washington Post. Bradlee took the helm of The Washington Post in 1965. He and his reporters transformed it ...
