Rome: Domenico de' Rossi, Date: 1693. Large folio. 10 hand-coloured engraved plates by Dorigny on laid paper (each 15 7/8 x 26 inches approximately), titles and imprints printed in gold, black ink-ruled borders, each plate cut to the edge of the image, mounted on large sheets of contemporary thick laid paper (each 29 3/8 x 40 3/8 inches approximately). Unbound A very fine suite of richly hand-coloured plates offering a stunning visual record of one of the best of the decorative interior schemes carried out by Raphael in Rome. This wonderful series records Raphael's 'Cupid and Psyche' series of frescoes, carried out by him between 1516 and 1518 in the Loggia of Psyche in the villa Farnesina in Rome. The series also comes with a title and an eleventh plate of the ceiling fresco in the adjoining Sala di Galatea, executed in 1512: neither the plate nor the title are present here. Originally published by the Rossis, the engravings are the work of Nicolas Dorigny (1658-1746) who lived and worked in Rome between about 1690 and 1719. The painter, classicist, and art historian Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696) provided the text at the foot of the plates (appropriate excerpts from Apuleuis's Golden Ass). Three vols. 8vo (246 x 173 mm.), a cont. tetsuyoso binding, gold silk endpapers with patterns of pine trees & sprays of gold (kindei, "golden mud"), with gold silk brocade over semi-stiff wrappers, red silk manuscript title labels on upper covers. [Japan]: 1707? A beautifully calligraphed manuscript, in three volumes, of the Sandaishu ["collection of three reigns"], the collection of the first three of 21 imperially commissioned waka poetry anthologies compiled from 905 to 1439. These three collections are: 1. Kokin wakashu, compiled ca. 905-20; 2. Gosen wakashu, compiled 951 ff.; 3. Shui wakashu, compiled 1005-11. These first three "provided the model of language; in formal poetry thereafter, a poet was expected to use that word hoard (although innovations were made). The first of the twenty-one set the organizational principles for the rest...The conception underlying the [first] collection no doubt reflected then existing ideas about poetry. But it realizes them so well and so influentially that to some degree all Japanese poetry before 1868 is conceivable only on its terms."-Miner et al., eds., The Princeton Companion to Classical Japanese Literature (1985), p. 342 & p. 187. The Kokin wakashu was envisioned by Emperor Uda (reigned 887-97) and ordered by Emperor Daigo (reigned 897-930), perhaps in 905. These 1111 poems were selected by Ki no Tsurayuki, Ki no Tomonori, ...

Rome, Date: 1774. Copper engraving by Ottaviani after drawings by Savorelli and Camporesi, printed in light brown coloured ink with contemporary hand-colouring. Good condition. Shaved within plate mark, expert neat repairs to left margin, one just affecting the image area. A stunning plate from "Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano": with contemporary colouring of the highest quality from the golden age of the hand-coloured print. A very fine image from the second part of a work titled "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" depicting the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. They were drawn by Gaetano Savorelli, a Roman painter and draughtsman best known for his Raphael drawings, and Pietro Camporesi, a Roman architect, who worked for Pope Clemens XIII and Pius VI on rooms for the Vatican Museum. One large page, 9 x 5 1/2 inches. Superb and early autograph letter signed by famed American artist and illustrator Will Bradley to Frances F. Browne, a noted editor and literary critic with whom Bradley would work closely with, over the years. Written on Bradley's stationary, printed at top left: "Will H. Bradley/Artist/1111 Monadnock Building/Chicago." The letter is almost entirely taken up with design and description of his art: "Aug 25, -92. Mr. Frances F. Browne, Dear Sir: I will explain the design & send you by today's mail, as the pencil sketch is not very clear. Below the dial are laurel branches which support the dial and also two torches. The sun is indicated, its rays forming a background to add a little strength to center of design. The laurel branches are woven to form four leaf shaped designs in the center of which are emblems, the ribbon work continues below the title and on this I have indicated the sub-title as it will help to make the design compact. The rough sketch looks a little crowded, but the finished drawing will not appear so, as the title will be strong... " Very good, with slight browning to bottom, crease marks barely visible to face of letter. Early Will Bradley letters are scarce, especially with association. US

Np/nd. Quarto. The National Library of Australia estimates the large accordion style Chinese classic printed on gold silk was issued between 1912 and 1926 and suggests it came from Japan. The online copy of this issue is noted as exceptionally scarce and is available for viewing from their website #6333308. Our copy usually has the stamped in red letters below the image instead of over it as is evidenced in their online version. Very rare with most of the reprints online having been issued after 2009. Certainly, the original, which is the National Palace Museum in Beijing, PRC exists in an almost prefect copy with most of the original details intact. It was issued as a scroll and is usually displayed in a glass case though the original would have been viewed one section at a time, beginning from the right end. Most of the scholarship presupposes that the city depicted in the scroll is the Northern Song capital of Kaifeng thus the Bian River would be the one presented here. However, Valerie Hansen of Yale University has argued that the scroll is a depiction of an idealized city rather than a specific city of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). Errata sheet bound in. 1 vols. 8vo (signed in fours). Notable on page 231, paragraph XI, is a reiteration of legislation originally set fourth in the New Jersey Constitution, in 1776, reading in part: "And be it enacted, That all free inhabitants of this state, of full age, who are worth fifty pounds proclamation money, and have resided within the county in which they claim a vote for twelve months immediately preceding the election, shall be entitled to vote for all public officers..." Once dismissed as a possible oversight or sloppy wording on the part of its framers, historians now believe that the phrase "all free inhabitants" intentionally extended the right to vote, not only to women, but to free blacks, as well as aliens. In addition, the act does include a property requirement, only that the person be worth "fifty pounds proclamation money," which included cash. This short-lived legislation, which was rescinded in 1807, makes New Jersey the first state to extend the right to vote citizens regardless of race or gender. Evans ...

Date: 1892. San Francisco | New York: Western Authors Publishing Company, 1892. Original blind-stamped light grey cloth, beveled. First Edition of Bierce's first volume of verse, published the year after his most famous book, TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS. There are about 150 short poems (which he terms "beetles"), mostly gleaned from appearances in newspapers. Bierce had seen action, including at Shiloh, in an Indiana Infantry Regiment; his anti-war sentiments, and fixation with death, are reflected in his writings. In our experience this is a tough book to find in decent condition, due to its light grey cloth and frugal use of gilt. This is a nearly fine copy, however, with scarcely any wear and with only the slightest hint of soil (near the covers' fore-edge). Blanck 1111. 1892. US

Pictorial magenta boards lettered in white with lilac spine labels. A fine, as new set. Volume I offers an account of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111) as a rational theologian who created a symbiosis of philosophy and theology and infused rationality into Sufism. The majority of the papers herein deal with important topics of al-Ghazālī's work, which demonstrate his rational treatment of the Qurʾān and major subjects of Islamic theology and everyday life of Muslims. Some other contributions address al-Ghazālī's sources and how his intellectual endeavors were later received by scholars who had the same concern of reconciling religion and rationality within Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Volume II brings together twelve leading experts on al-Ghazālī who write about his thoughts and the impact they had on later Muslim thinkers. Contents: v. 1. God versus causality: Al-Ghazālī's solution and its historical background / Hans Daiber -- Al-Ghazālī's changing attitude to philosophy / Wilferd Madelung -- Al-Ghazālī and the rationalization of Sufism / Binyamin Abrahamov -- Revelation, sciences and symbolism: Al-Ghazālī's Jawāhir al-Qurʼān / Georges Tamer -- Al-Ghazālī at his most rationalist: the universal rule for allegorically interpreting revelation (al-Qānūn al-Kullī ...

First edition. 1 vols. Sm 4to. This is Killigrew's proposal for allaying the national debt by a system of bonds and paper specie. He had presented a similar proposal in the early reign of William and Mary, and apparently revives it here with additions and answers to some of his critics. Kress and the DNB give 1663 as the date of publication but he makes references to "the reign of Charles II" and in the "Clause" the notation "To carry on the War the year 97" appears. Killigrew died in October 1695. Following this pamphlet is a single leaf entitled "To the Honourable the Knights, Citizens and Burgesses in Parliament Assembled, The Humble Petition of Percivall Brunskell, Gent." NEW JERSEY. LAWS. Acts of the twenty-fifth general assembly of the state of New-Jersey. At a session begun at Trenton, on the twenty-eighth day of October, one thousand eight hundred, and continued by adjournments. Being the first sitting. Trenton: Sherman, Mershon & Thomas, 1800. 8vo. 29, [2] p. Untrimmed. Later law buckram, leather spine labels. Ex-library, with old stamp on title but no external markings. The first New Jersey session laws to be produced in octavo format. For nearly a hundred years the major New Jersey government documents--session laws, assembly votes, council journals--were published in folio format. In early November 1800, the state printers at the time, George Sherman, John Mershon, and Isaiah Thomas, petitioned the assembly to reduce government document printing from folio to octavo, and they presented the cost-saving statistics. The assembly was convinced, and from then on the standard government printing was done in octavo. Evans 38062; Felcone, Printing in New Jersey, 1754-1800, 1111; ESTC W25911. US
