TerHorst served as Ford's first Press Secretary but resigned after just a few weeks in the wake of Ford's preemptive pardon of newly former President Nixon. TerHorst had covered Ford for decades as the Washington correspondent for the Detroit News. David Broder of the Washington Post was widely regarded as the nation's top political reporter in the later decades of the 20th Century. Broder appears several times in the book, and TerHrost notes in the preface that Broder provided consultation with the manuscript.
