William Brashler thoroughly researched old newspaper accounts and spoke with some of the players who played with and against Gibson such as Judy Johnson, Cool Papa Bell and Jimmie Crutchfield. Brashler also authored The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings, a novel of a touring black baseball team in the pre-Jackie Robinson era.
