Of Aristeas himself there are a few biographical details, the fantastical account of his death and resurrection related by Herodotus, and the Pythagorean legends of his Apollo-possessed ghost and its 'soul journeys'. The Arimaspea is known to us only through fragments quoted by Herodotus and other ancient authors. This study draws together and classifies all the fragments of the poem from ancient texts.
