ISBN10: 0333474430, ISBN13: 9780333474433, [publisher: Palgrave Macmillan, United Kingdom, Basingstoke] Softcover The 12 essays contained in this volume constitute an assessment of the reconstruction of European cities after the Second World War. The essays are based upon new research by a body of contributors from eight countries, including architects, town planners, archivists and geographers. Several authors stress the fact that planning experiences after World War I and during the period of Nazi domination shaped post-1945 reconstruction, while others analyze the successes and failures of reconstruction under Soviet-dominated socialist regimes. In all cases, it is explained how those responsible for rebuilding had to grapple with the complex issues of architectural design, town planning and historical preservationism - issues which have lost none of their relevance today. Significant architectural continuities before and after World War II are highlighted and several unusual instances of rebuilding are mentioned in case studies. Jeffry M.Diefendorf has also written the historical study Businessmen and Politics in the Rhineland, 1789-1834. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
