London: Hodder & Stoughton, Date: 1989. First UK Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Very Good. 9x6x1. First UK edition. Pages toned, jacket faintly rubbed. 1989 Hard Cover. Who was the first man to stand on top of the world? Most polar historians grant that honor to Robert E. Peary, who, after a long and brilliant polar career, allegedly reached the North Pole on April t, 1909. Long debated, but never proven or disproven, Peary's ultimate achievement seemed destined to remain forever an enigma unenlightened by first-hand information. The Noose of Laurels changes that. Here, Wally Herbert, one of the finest polar explorers of our time, takes on the task of analyzing Peary's achievements. He is uniquely capable to do so, as he is the first polar traveler ever to assess the records and claims of Peary and his chief rival, Dr. Frederick Cook. 1989. Hodder & Stoughton ISBN 0340412763 US

In retracing their steps and examining their papers, he uncovers a tale of obsession, rivalry and monumental deception. This is a first edition of The Noose of Laurels, The Discovery of the North Pole, published in Date: 1989. It is both a valuable addition to Arctic history, and a gripping adventure story.Who was the first to reach the North Pole: Frederick Cook or Robert Peary? Or did neither? This book provides a plausible answer. After the British National Geographic Society persuaded Peary's family to finally release his diary, notes and astronomical observations, veteran polar explorer Wally Herbert was invited to assess them. Herbert, who retraced the routes of both men, provides an intensive examination of each man's claim to the Pole. He demolishes Cook's claim, then seriously questions Peary's. You have to read the book to learn his verdict. 395 pages, including photos. This was slated for review by the Vancouver Sun. The editor wrote 'For Review' on a post-it note and stuck it to the cover. Then she put the dust jacket back on, no one ever reviewed it, and that post-it note has been until today. So there's a glue mark on the cover (photo #4) but that will dry up and flake off. There's a little bit of shelfwear to the dust jacket. The inside is perfect but, as you can see, the publisher used extremely porous paper and it has yellowed considerably. But there are no marks on any of the pages--I don't think it's been read. 1989. ISBN10: 0340412763, ISBN13: 9780340412763, [publisher: Hodder and Stoughton] Hardcover First Edition 1989. Hodder and Stoughton. First. Book: Near Fine. Dj: Near Fine. 9.5x6.5. 395pp. Illustrated with 10 maps, diagrams and b/w photographs. The discovery of the North Pole by Commander Robert E. Peary was an event which awoke the patriotic pride of America in 1909. When Wally Herbert opened Peary's log to this discovery he was surprised to find blank pages. He was shocked by Peary's slack navigation, no observations on longitude, speeds and distances. This is a compelling portrait of this flawed but remarkable polar explorer which peels away the myth of Peary to expose the tragedy of that myth - the far more human hero.
