At the end of 1912 Jacques Schneider announced his intention of presenting an annual trophy for an international seaplane contest. The first contest was held in Monaco in 1913 and was won by France. Britain won the 1914 event, and then the war caused the suspension of the series until 1919. There were only twelve Schneider contests but they were major international events. The main contestants were Britain, France, Italy and the United States, but France never won after 1913 and no United States aircraft participated after 1926. Thus Britain and Italy became the major rivals.
