ISBN10: 0374109141, ISBN13: 9780374109141, [publisher: Farrar, Straus & Giroux] Hardcover First Edition The first of John McPhees works in his series on geology and geologists, Basin and Range is a book of journeys through ancient terrains, always in juxtaposition with travels in the modern world-a history of vanished landscapes, enhanced by the histories of people who bring them to light. The title refers to the physiographic province of the United States that reaches from eastern Utah to eastern California, a silent world of austere beauty, of hundreds of discrete high mountain ranges that are green with junipers and often white with snow. The terrain becomes the setting for a lyrical evocation of the science of geology, with important digressions into the plate-tectonics revolution and the history of the geologic time scale. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Date: 1981. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Association copy. First edition first printing hardcover, inscribed on the half title page: "For Rocco Siciliano, a man whose first name could not be more appropriate in this context, from Roemer s brother, John McPhee." You ve got to love McPhee s humor: It s a book about about rocks. Rocco Siciliano was an accomplished businessman who grew up in Salt Lake City thus his keen interest in this particular book. He settled in Los Angeles, but became a major donor to the University of Utah, his alma mater. He also served in an advisory capacity to four presidential administrations. Laid in is a short 6 x 9" typed note signed by Roemer McPhee, John s older brother, that reads, mainly: "Everything comes to him who waits. You knew, of course, that I would not see John until last weekend. He was happy to inscribe the book and I think he did so appropriately." Perhaps Rocco was really eager to read and had expressed some impatience? Roemer McPhee is a New York investor and philanthropist who is also quite literary, having written a book himself called The Boomer's Guide to Story: A Search for Insight in Literature and Film. This book is in very good condition because, unfortunately, a minor coffee accident has affected its lower right corner. (Italians love their espresso. Could have been much worse!) The jacket is very good for that reason, too, though the spill is not noticeable on it from the outs ...
ISBN10: 0374109141, ISBN13: 9780374109141, [publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux] Hardcover First Edition Association copy. First printing hardcover with an inscription on the half title: "For Murray Murphey, from LeAnna Whitman, and with all best, too, from a friend dating back to early geologic time. John McPhee." That's a fun bit of wit from McPhee, considering the book. LeAnna Whitman is John McPhee s sister-in-law (he is married to Yolanda Whitman), and Murray Murphey was a philosopher and historian at the University of Pennsylvania, where he pioneered and chaired the Department of American Civilization. Murphey and McPhee shared a fellowship year at Cambridge University in 1953-1954, which is likely when and where they became friends the "early geologic time" McPhee references. Murphey grew up in Colorado Springs and no doubt had an appreciation for Western geography and geology. He contributed, for example, an essay on John Wesley Powell's "The Exploration of the Colorado River" to the anthology Landmarks of American Writing--and a first edition hardcover of that anthology (ed. Hennig Cohen, Basic Book 1969) is included with this purchase. This copy of the Basin and Range is in very good condition, its only demerit some foxing to the page block, especially the top face, and some adjacent foxing to the top edges of the boards. The jacket is very good; the cover looks great with some faint sunning to spine and some foxing ...
FIRST EDITION, THIRD PRINTING. RARE SIGNED BY AUTHOR with personal note: "for Jack Beahan from Michael and all best from Michael's colleagues - John McPhee". Jack Beahan was editor of local Winter Haven, FL newspaper and met McPhee and was a great fan of the author's non-fiction. (Michael was Jack's nephew). This book is first part of of McPhee's Pulitzer-prize-winning "Annals of the Former World." Date: 1981. Farrar, Straus And Giroux ISBN 0374109141 9780374109141 [US]
