Instead, he rejects the conception of meaning as an 'inner state' and recommends that we look to the natural use of signs over time. Once questions of interpretation are settled, the book goes on to evaluate Wittgenstein's position. He is found to be importantly right in his basic contentions, but these need to be separated from associated claims which are not acceptable; in particular, he places too much emphasis upon rule-following behaviour. In the last part of the book Kripke's arguments are criticised in their own right, and the factuality of ascriptions of meaning defended.
