Note that in earlier issues of the Loeb Library, Volume 44 was also for The Golden Ass, but the version used in those earlier issues was a revision of the 1566 English translation by W Adlington. This new translation appears as Volume 44 (first part) and the second part in Volume 453, and was commissioned by the editors of this series, and completed in 1983, but was not published until 1989, four years after the translator died (thus no translator's preface).
