Samuel Eliot Morison (1887?1976) was an American historian noted for his works of maritime history and American history that were both authoritative and popular. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1912, and taught history at the university for 40 years. He was convinced that too many histories were written from the outside looking in. He felt that more was to be gained by writing in contact with the events, when most of the participants were alive, than by waiting until the ships were broken up and the sailors had departed. Just after Pearl Harbor, Professor Morison went to President Roosevelt with his idea. The President and Secretary Knox were enthusiastic. Professor Morison soon became Lieutenant Commander Morison, USNR, with the writing assignment that he had suggested. The result was the 15 volume work: History of United States Naval Operations in World War II. This is volume 13, illustrated with B&W photos and maps, indexed with supplemental information in appendices, xxvii+ 338pp + 19pp not numbered photos and maps.
