Lightest edgewear to dustwrapper, which has slightly sunned spine panel; trace of foxing to endpapers and edges. Very good condition. 'W.H.C. Lichtenstein was a remarkable German medical doctor who visited South Africa in 1802, and undertook a most impressive research program that ended in 1806. Characteristic of the scientific attitudes of his time, he planned to "give a regular description of the country, as to its topography, political situation, natural history and ethnography ... and a general history." In fact, he achieved all but his last objective, his "Reisen im südlichen Afrika' was published in 1811-12, and has maintained a status of considerable importance to this day. In addition to this work, Lichtenstein wrote in 1810 (but did not publish) a fragment of what was the first history of South Africa. The uncommon manuscript is here published for the first time.
