There is such a thing as 'chronological snobbery' in reverse: instead of uncritically equating newer with truer or better, reverse chronological snobs assume the opposite, and condemn the new as inevitably a corruption and decline from the old. The opinions of either type of chronological snob are very predictable. Fr. Jonathan Robinson of the Oratory offers something different: a trenchant critique of post-Vatican II celebration of the Mass (of these there are many) and a call for a 'reform of the reform,' but constructed upon an unusually perceptive analysis of modernity itself and its role in forming the assumptions of the post-Conciliar liturgical reformers. Fr. Robinson believes that 'ideas have hooks,' and that unsuspected sources lie beneath the ideals of those responsible for implementing Vatican II's liturgical directives. Regarding these, he is charitable yet uncompromising: 'I contend that in trying to deal with modernity, the reformers of the Catholic liturgy have taken wrong turnings and made mistakes . . .
