Change was in the air. In southern Dunedin as in most of the Western world, transformations in femin inity and masculinity both shaped and were shaped by the era of m odernity. This book, the product of five years' work by an interd isciplinary group of scholars, examines gender in a particular 'p lace': the suburbs of southern Dunedin, which were in many respec ts typical of Western societies, but also relatively predisposed towards gender change. The authors address gender through a serie s of 'sites': work, education, consumption, leisure, poverty, mob ility and transport, health, and religion. Through this decisive fifty-year period, as young women increasingly worked for pay bef ore marriage and went on to have fewer babies than their mothers, and as many men began turning their backs on the pub to spend mo re time with their families, such apparently unobtrusive changes in gender relations reshaped the experience of urban life and pla yed a major part in making it modern. This book demonstrates how 'setting gender deep' in the context of a particular place - in t his case New Zealand's earliest industrial suburbs - can illumina te the complex character of a key issue in debates ...

ISBN 1869403053 Publisher: Auckland University Press, 2003. This study is the fruit of five years' work by a group of Dunedin scholars into the complex ways in which gender operated as a social structure and a shaping force in the lives of the inhabitants of southern Dunedin in the years from 1890 to World War II. It is significant in several ways: in its reliance on the huge database developed from the 1970s by the Caversham Project; in its interdisciplinary character, with contributions from the fields of history, geography, urban planning, gender studies and clothing technology; and its use of both qualitative and quantitative analysis including some vivid and lively insights from oral history.
