The Brandenburg D.I was the first biplane fighter of the Luftfahrtruppe, the Austro-Hungarian air service. This book is the most complete history of this significant aircraft ever presented. The Brandenburg D.I, frequently called the KD for Kampf- doppeldecker, or biplane fighter, was a transitional fighter. It offered its pilots better performance than the Fokker monoplanes that had been the early mainstay of the the Luftfahrtrupp and lead to the more capable Aviatik D.I, Albatros D.II and D.III, and Phonix D.I, D.II, and D.IIa biplane fighters that followed it into service. This detailed operational history of the Brandenburg D.I is the work of Karl Meindl and Walter Schroeder, who contributed most of the photographs together with the color references. The KD was sturdy and streamlined, its unique star strut arrangement eliminating the drag- producing bracing wires used by most biplanes. This made it for its time, a critical quality in a fighter. Unfortunately, the star struts were also heavy. Their weight, coupled with the weight of the water-cooled engine, gave it a poor rate of climb. The over-wing armament used by most KD fighters was troublesome and unreliable, a trait it shared with the similarly-armed Nieuport 11 and 17 fighters that were its frequent adversaries.
