London: Primrose Hill Press Ltd, Date: 2002. First edition. Hardback. 475pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Simon Brett, a British wood engraver, spent two years putting together this anthology. It is a comprehensive survey of the state of wood engraving as it entered the twenty first century, showing the work of over two hundred artists from twenty three countries. Few art books allow the comparison of such varied aesthetics through the lens of a single art form. Post-Soviet neo-classicism may be compared here with rugged American individualism; and sophisticated Polish abstraction with what the Japanese make of such a very 'British' art form as wood engraving. There is work from Poland, South America and Estonia, as well as from the principal exponents of the tradition: Britain, the USA and Germany. The heirs of Bewick and Blake are more widely spread than ever before. This was a review copy sent to Pat Jaffe (wood engraver and art historian) and comes with a selection of interesting correspondence (some from the author) together with drafts of a review of the book (some in ms). Illustrations on almost every page. Book in very good condition. Slight lean to spine. Very minor spotting to text block edges. Internally clean and bright and free of marks. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. A very heavy book but no additional shipping charges to UK post codes. If buying from overseas, please ask for a firm shipping quote. 2002.
