About the book >.>.> Eventually to form part of the Circle Line, the Metropolitan Railway's route between Farringdon Street and Paddington opened in 1863. The Metropolitan & St. Johns Wood Railway branched north from it at Baker Street and came into use on 13th April 1868, to Swiss Cottage. The line was extended thus: to West Hampstead on 30th June 1879, to Willesden Green on 24th November 1879, to Harrow-on- the-Hill on 2nd August 1880 and to Pinner on 25th May 1885, Aylesbury eventually being reached in 1892. The Met had absorbed the M&SWR in 1882, having operated its services from the outset. Meanwhile the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway had expansionist plans aimed on London and its name was changed to the Great Central Railway in 1897. It made an agreement with the Met to operate over its route south of Quainton Road (which is north of Aylesbury) to a new terminus at Marylebone, this coming into use on 15th March 1899.
