Bangkok: Orchid Press, Date: 2002. The map consists of two views - the upper portion is that of the inner city of Lhasa (1:1220) and the lower portion provides a view of 'greater' Lhasa, including the Potala and adjacent village of Zhol, and to the west, Norbu Lingka, the Dalai Lama's summer residence (1:4572). The inner city plan identifies every building then extant, with legend in Tibetan script. A key in English is provided to locate major temples, offices and other landmarks shown in the lower view. A copy of this map was included as an insert in the publication 'Peter Aufschnaiter's Eight Years in Tibet' (ISBN 9789745240124). The original was created by Aufschnaiter during his years of sojourn in Tibet (1944-52), prior to the upheaval and destruction of the Cultural Revolution and subsequent Chinese influx. The map is now held in the Ethnological Museum, the University of Zurich. Facsimile reprint on 250g. art stock, folded to 20 x 16 cm. Softbound. As New. 70 x 60 cm. 2002. Orchid Press /Biblio
Bangkok: Orchid Press, Date: 2002. A remarkable personal account of a sojourn of nearly eight years in Tibet, ending in 1952, compiled from the notes, sketches and photographs of Peter Aufschnaiter. An Austrian agricultural engineer, Aufschaiter developed a deep love and sympathy for the Tibetan people, sentiments which were readily reciprocated. Throughout his stay in Tibet, Aufschnaiter worked tirelessly not only to understand the people, their culture and religion, but also to share his skills in any area which could improve their lot. A brilliant linguist, mountaineer and observer, Aufschnaiter provides us with the most detailed and sensitive record available of the Tibetans and their way of life, on the eve of the Chinese invasion which was to wreak such irreversible damage to this unique culture. 208 pp., 70 b&w and 67 colour plates, 11 maps in text and one separate large (70 x 60 cm) colour fold-out map of Lhasa in back pocket.
