Craigs Germany, 1866-1945, which was first published in 1978. While Craigs starting-point established the year in which my book would end, I have purposely avoided selecting a significant event with which to begin: 1770 is no more than a notational convenience. It seems to me that to have begun with a particular date, such as the start of Frederick the Greats reign or the outbreak of the French revolution, would have given my story a predetermined shape and structure. I do not think modern German history began with Frederick or the revolution or any other single phenomenon. As I shall argue at length in this book, German history between the mid-eighteenth century and the formation of the Bismarckian Reich was shaped by three separable, but closely linked developments: the rise of sovereign territorial states, the expansion of economic activity and social mobility, and the emergence of what I shall call a literary culture. -- My first three chapters treat each of these developments in their eighteenth-century setting.
