The author argues that three factors have determined the locations of human activities: the environment, the attitudes and forms of the social organization of the many different peoples of Europe, and technology levels. Within the broad framework of the interrelationships of environment, society, and technology, several important themes are pursued from the fifth century B.C. to the early twentieth century: settlement and agriculture, the growth of cities, the development of manufacturing, and the role of trade. Underlying each of these themes are the discussions of political organization and population. The book is in alternating sets of chapters. In one set, a "picture" is presented of Europe as it might have appeared at seven particular times in the course of its history: the time of Athenian greatness in the fifth century B.C., the culmination of Roman imperial power in the second century A.D., the time of Charlemagne, the early fourteenth century, the Renaissance, the eve of the Industrial Revolution, and the first decade of the present century.
