ISBN10: 0571169961, ISBN13: 9780571169962, [publisher: Faber & Faber, United Kingdom, London] Softcover The paintings and engravings of William Hogarth, the subject of this biography, have always been popular, but outside art history little is known about his life. He moved in the worlds of theatre, literature, journalism and politics, and found subjects for his work over the whole gamut of 18th-century London, from street scenes to drawing rooms, and from churches to gambling halls and prisons. Hogarth was made wealthy by his engravings for The Harlot's Progress, but remained highly critical of the growing gulf between the luxurious lives of the ruling elite and the wretched poverty of the masses. Swift described him as a pleasant rogue, and he numbered the likes of Pope and Horace Walpole among his friends. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. [Goring-By-Sea, WS, United Kingdom] [Publication Year: 1998]

ISBN10: 0571169961, ISBN13: 9780571169962, [publisher: Faber & Faber, Great Britain] Softcover Paperback. Uncorrected Proof Copy. Hogarth. A Life and a World. Couple of small creases to cover. William Hogarth (1697-1764) stamped his name on an era - Hogarth's England. His prints hang in pubs and leap out from history books. He painted thje great and good but also the common people. In this powerful, rich and copiously illustrated biography, the author uncovers Hogarth the man, but also the world he sprang from and the lives he pictured - in his progresses of the Harlot and the Rake, in the fashionable Marriage A-la-Mode and the horrifying Gin Lane, and in his many conversation pieces, portraits and prints. Hogarth's story is a fascinating one: he moved in the worlds of theatre, literature, journalism and politics, and he lived through a period of extraordinary changes: the time of the British empire, with colonies built on slavery and convict labour, a time of great turbulence, with war abroad and riots and Jacobite rebellion at home; an exciting time of intellectual and scientific exploration. A fascinating study of an age and a portrait of a great artist, this book also reveals a proud, stubborn, comic, vulnerable man. Most importantly, it returns Hogarth to the people. The paintings and engravings of William Hogarth, the subject of this biography, have always been popular, but outside art history little is known about his life. He moved in the worlds of theatre, literature, journalism and politics, and found subjects for his work over the whole gamut of 18th-century London, from street scenes to drawing rooms, and from churches to gambling halls and prisons. Hogarth was made wealthy by his engravings for "The Harlot's Progress", but remained highly critical of the growing gulf between the luxurious lives of the ruling elite and the wretched poverty of the masses. Swift described him as a "pleasant rogue", and he numbered the likes of Pope and Horace Walpole among his friends. Faber and Faber, 1997. ISBN 0571169961 9780571169962 [GB]
