ISBN10: 0710076266, ISBN13: 9780710076267, [publisher: Routledge and Kegan Paul plc] Hardcover First Edition Spine a bit faded. From the preface: " There is a long antimetaphysical tradition, the latest expression of which is the belief that the search for a world picture is old fashioned, since the advent of quantum theory. I do not agree with this view and this book is, in one respect, one long argument against it. The story of the development of field theory shows, I think, that the search for a true world picture has not been an accidental side feature of the growth of science, but rather a central feature of its most important advances. As well as reporting on the development of field theory, there are several theses I argue for. Two, concerning scientific method, I have just mentioned. A third concerns Faraday's metaphysics. There are four main ideas of material substance I discuss in the book: those of Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, and Einstein. The main theme of the book is how the latter three developed. My thesis is that Faraday's idea of material substance is different from, and in some ways superior to, those of Newton, Maxwell, and Einstein. This point is developed throughout the book, and is concluded in the last two sections of the book. " [Sardent, France] [Publication Year: 1974] ...
