University of Pennsylvania Press 1961 Reprint 2016 ed. Paperback Good Size: 8 x 5.7 x 1.4 inches; Retired library book with usual library markings. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. As the presidential career of George Washington was drawing to a close, the young nation was divided over the scope of Federal and State authority. The bitter partisan struggle between Federalists and Republicans was to erupt in the presidency of Adams and was to lead to the collapse of Federalism and a reorientation of American political life by the time his tenure ended. This volume is not only a record of the administration of our second president, but a detailed record of the first political battles on a national scale. Beginning with the issues of the presidential election of 1796, the author analyzes Adams' career in office, casting new light on this turbulent period and on the roles played by Hamilton, Jefferson and other eminent political figures of the time. The author, a graduate of Princeton, received his Ph.D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was also instructor in American History. Following a term as Professor of History at Athens College under a Fulbright teaching grant, he returned to the United States to become Dean of Students and Professor of History at Wabash College. 448 pages.
