"One of the most popular of the south European epic heroes-a counterpart of the French Roland or Spain's El Cid-Price Marko has not been well known in America. The historical Marko headed a small kingdom in Macedonia in the fourteenth century. A vassal of the Turkish sultans, he was a relatively minor historical figure. Yet in the oral tradition he was transmuted into a figure of legend, the great hero who protected the South Slavic people from injustice and oppression during a long history of hardship. Popular interest in the legendary Prince Marko has persisted through the centuries in Europe, and contemporary enthusiasm about him remains high. Serbs and Macedonians invoked his name in the Balkan War against the Turks and in World War II against the Germans; Ivan Mestrovic reinforced the epic nature of Price Marko in his monumental sculptures; and Marguerite Yourcenar included him in the images and tales in her work. Popovic has traced the Marko themes, in the Balkans and as crossovers to the Vlachs (Romanians), Hungarians, Ukrainians, and some French and Italian ...
ISBN10: 0815624441, ISBN13: 9780815624448, [publisher: Syracuse University Press] Hardcover First Edition "1st edition, 1st printing. Hardbound book condition: fine. Dust jacket condition: fine. Dust jacket fine and protected in mylar sleeve; burgundy boards fine with bright silver titles at spine; sewn binding sound; pages and illustrations fine, unmarked. 221 pages; 9.3 X 6.3 X 1; 1 lb. 8.5 oz. shipping weight. The first American scholar to study South Slavic epic was Milman Parry (1902-1935) ably assisted by his student Albert Lord (1912-1991) who helped develop Parry's theory about how a poet like Homer might memorize vast amounts of oral poetry through the use of epic formulas. "Swift-footed Achilles" is one such formula, and the theory supposes that the stringing of such formulas together would ease the task of the poet. This supposition was borne out through Parry's study of Yugoslav oral poets of the early 20th century. In this volume, Popovi? compares the hero, Prince Marko to the actual historical prince. Prince Marko, an actual Serbian ruler of the 14th century has, largely owing to the efforts of such poets, become the national hero of Serbia, Bulgaria, and Macedonia."
