The humanist Hermann Schotten, or Hermannus Schottennius Hessus (ca 1503-1546), was a student, a schoolmaster, and finally a university lecturer in Cologne. Throughout his career he wrote a number of works on humanist pedagogy. His Confabulationes tironum litterariorum of 1525 is one of the most fascinating collections of Latin school colloquies of the sixteenth century. Designed to help schoolboys to master Classical Latin conversation, it was written in admiring imitation of the colloquies of Erasmus, and under the influence of other leading colloquy collections.
