Koudelka traveled throughout Europe following the route of this nomadic folk. Most of the photographs in this book were made in the encampments of Eastern Slovakia, between 1962 and 1968. Black and white photography at its best. Koudelka left Czechoslovakia for political asylum in 1970 and shortly thereafter joined Magnum Photos. In 1975, he brought out this first book, Gypsies. In 1975, Robert Delpire, Aperture, and Koudelka collaborated to publish Gitans, la fin du voyage (Gypsies, in the English-language edition).
