The late E. T. MacDermot's two-volume History of the Great Western Railway, published in 1927 and 1931, was the second detailed history of a large railway. It carried the story through from inception in 1833 to the Grouping of 1923 and was soon recognised as a classic with a very high standard of accuracy.
