John Murray 1836 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Size: Large 8vo 9"-10; Complete in two volumes, bound most handsomely in heavy dark brown cloth in a short quarto format, measuring 9 1/2" x 7" tall and wide, respectively, with blind-stamped rulings to both front and rear boards, fleurs-de-lis in inside corners thereof. Spines feature raised bands, gilt lettering stamped sharply into three compartments, title, volume and place of publication. All edges gilt. Moderate wear to extremities, some peeling to and scuffing of cloth here and there, previous owner's library accession plates inside front flaps, and with some but very little foxing of endpapers and verso of plates. Both title pages illustrated with steel engravings, and several score more steel engraved plates, quite fine, including sketches by Turner and Roberts and Catherwood and others depicting Palestine, Israel, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The engraver brothers, William Finden (1787-1852) and Edward Francis Finden (1791-1857), specialized in portraiture and landscape engravings. The Reverend Thomas Hartwell Horne (1780-1862) was a rare book scholar and curator for the Department of Printed Books of the British Museum for several decades. Volume I, unpaginated except for xii + plates and captions opposite, and Volume II, iv + plates and extensive comment thereon in captions.
