Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, top corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (£8.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy, looks unread. 368pp. After fire walking in Polynesia, fundamentalist minister Alexander Hergensheimer never saw the world the same. Now called Alec Graham, he is in the middle of an affair with his stewardess, Margrethe, when natural disasters begin plaguing them. First, there is an impossible iceberg that wrecks the ship in the tropics, then, after being rescued by a Royal Mexican plane, they are hit by a double earthquake. To Alex, the signs are clear. Armageddon and the Day of Judgment are near. Somehow, he has to bring his beloved heathen, Margrethe, to a state of grace, for heaven would be no paradise without her. But time is growing short. And, while he is at it, there has to be a way to save the rest of the world. Robert Heinlein's (1907-88), a satire on organised religion (Heinlein himself was an agnostic). The title is a reference to the biblical Book of Job and James Branch Cabell's book 'Jurgen, 'A Comedy of Justice'. Hardcover OPTA (n°29), 27 jan. 1971. An 2075.

'The historians can't seem to settle whether to call this one 'The Third Space War' (or the fourth), or whether 'The First Interstellar War' fits it better. We just call it 'The Bug War'. Everything up to then and still later were 'incidents', 'patrols' or 'police actions'. However, you are just as dead if you buy the farm in an 'incident' as you are if you buy it in a declared war.'5,000 years in the future, humanity faces total extermination. Our one defence: highly-trained soldiers who scour the metal-strewn blackness of space to hunt down a terrifying enemy: an insect life-form known only as 'Bugs.'This is the story of trooper Johnny Rico, from his idealistic enlistment in the infantry of the future through his rigorous training to the command of his own platoon. And his destiny is a war that will span the galaxy. The Hugo Award-winning novel that started the Military SF genre.
