ISBN10: 0713717327, ISBN13: 9780713717327, [publisher: Blandford Press, Dorset, UK] Hardcover The Iowa class was the last series of conventional battleships built and while most capital ships were taken out of service soon after WWII these remained active, being used in the Korean and Vietnam wars in shore bombardment roles and in some subsequent Middle East conflicts, including Iraq. Six ships of the Iowa class were ordered, two in 1938, two in 1939, two more in 1940. Iowa was the first to complete and was commissioned in February 1943, followed by New Jersey, May 1943, Wisconsin, April 1944 and Missouri, June 1944. Completion of the two other ships, Illinois and Kentucky, was cancelled during 1945 and they were broken up in 1958 and 1959 resopectively. The four ships completed saw active servive in the final phases of the Pacific war against Japan. All of these battle wagons were saved from the shipbreakers and are preserved as memorials/museums --- Iowa at Los Angles, New Jersey at Camden,NJ, Missouri at Pearl Harbour and Wisconsin at Norfolk, Viginia. As such they among only a few survivors of the battleship line that began with HMS Dreadnought in1906. Malcom Muir's study of the Iowas is a fitting reminder ships of this type which dominated the word's navies for many years.
