Govert Bidloo (1649-1713) was behalve dichter ook chirurg en later hoogleraar ontleedkunde in Leiden, lijfarts van koning-stadhouder Willem III en - evenals illustrator Romeyn de Hooghe - een vurig aanhanger van de Oranjevorst en verdediger van diens anti-Franse politiek. De stichtelijke ""brieven der gemartelde apostelen"" behoren - hoewel het hier uitsluitend om mannen gaat - tot het genre van de heldinnenbrieven, dichterlijke teksten in briefvorm van beroemde vrouwen gericht aan een geliefd of vertrouwd persoon. Het boekblok is plaatselijk gebruind en voornamelijk in het midden van het boekblok verstevigd in de marges. Prentbijbel of verhandeling van de Bijbelse geschiedenis door de Franse theoloog Jakob Basnage (1653-1723) hier verfraaid door gekleurde titelprenten en kaarten. Het werk is geïllustreerd met 2 titelprenten, 2 portretten, 6 kaarten, de dubbel pagina-grote gravure van de tempel van Salomo en de beroemde gravures en sluitvignetten van Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). De gravures zijn gedrukt op 82 bladen welke ingevoegd zijn bij het bijbehorende tekstgedeelte.
