ISBN10: 0691003025, ISBN13: 9780691003023, [publisher: Princeton University Press, Princeton / New Jersey] Softcover With corrections and a special preface for the second printing. Contents: I). Neoclassicism: Some problems of definition. II). The Exemplum Virtutis. III). Aspects of Neoclasic architecture. IV). Towards the Tabula Rasa. With notes and index. 215 illustrations. Robert Rosenblum (1927 - 2006) was an American art historian and curator known for his influential and often irreverent scholarship on European and American art of the mid-eighteenth to 20th century. He is perhaps best known for his innovations in curatorial practice, notably his inclusion of non-canonical works and his rejection of standard chronological ordering. Rosenblum's 'Transformations in Late Eighteenth Century Art' is still one of the best and most inspiring books on the art of neoclassicism and early romanticism. Encompassing both pictorial arts and architecture, it points central themes in the arts of that time. It offers clues to further investigations as to the seminal character of the fundamental changes in the art and architecture of the late 18th century.
