This most peculiar mystery was made up by four children to entertain Uncle Bob. Cream boards, red title to spine. B/w and two-tone illustrations. Spine and corners a little bumped. Light foxing to endpapers and page edges otherwise contents are in very good condition. Dust wrapper is a little edge worn with a couple of small tears. Rear panel and flap slightly grubby. [publisher: Collins, London] Hardcover THE MYSTERY THAT NEVER WAS. Enid Blyton Illustrated by Gilbert Dunlop. Collins, London 1965 Reprint 160pp Illustrated Hardback. This book was originally published in 1961 and this 1965 reprint is in first edition state being bound in yellow cloth covered boards with red titling to the spine. There is some typical age toning to the pages due to the paper used, top page edges stained burgundy, there is a neat inscription to the f.e.p. The publisher's price clipped dust wrapper has some edge wear and one or two closed tears but has now been covered in removable clear protective film. When Britain's best loved children's author originally submitted this book to one of her publishers (Macmillan) one of their readers considered the storyline to be racist. This was because the villains who were engaged in nefarious carrying ons such as fiddling a postal order or similar were described as 'foreign' and spoke in a 'foreign language' and so they chose not to publish it. The option was taken up by Collins and it was published in 1961. Then came retribution via Quadaffi, Sadaam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Bashar al Assad, the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda. I tell you, Enid Blyton has a lot to answer for! Ref Z4
