ISBN10: 0198253427, ISBN13: 9780198253426, [publisher: Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1979.] Hardcover First Edition xi, 791 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. In print in paperback only at US$180.00. 'The impact of freedom of contract in the 19th century extended far beyond the legal arena as an economic slogan and an ethical attitude. Atiyah traces the development and subsequent decline of the freedom of contract, depicting its effects on the law's development and the foundation of contractual obligations, as well as its broader implications for 19th century English life' (Oxford University Press Web site). 'A book of outstanding interest and of the very first importance. . . . [It] is a major achievement of scholarship, a landmark in legal history and the study of the foundation of contractual obligations' (Juridical Review). 'The breadth and depth of Atiyah's interdisciplinary scholarship, the brilliant treatment of complex movements of thought, flashing with insights and suggestions for further research, all justify the highest praise' (British Journal of Law and Society). 'An essential reference work' (Victorian Studies).

ISBN10: 0198253427, ISBN13: 9780198253426, [publisher: Oxford University Press, Oxford] Hardcover First Edition A very good copy of the scarce first edition. Binding is tight and the text is pristine: unmarked. Jacket is remarkably fresh, with a few unobtrusive nicks on the front flap fold. There is a 1/2" intact tear on the rear jacket panel at the base of the spine seam. The interior of the jacket is slightly foxed on the rear panel, and this has resulted in some discoloration along the edge of the rear blue cloth binding. Jacket is diagonally clipped at the base of the front flap fold. All in all a stunning copy.
