One Flag One Queen One Tongue: New Zealand, The British Empire and The South African War. The South African War was New Zealand's first overseas war - and one of its most popular. More than 40,000 people farewelled the First Contingent when it left Wellington for South Africa in October 1899. Furtyher contingents were quickly raised from the many volunteers who had come forward from all parts of the country. More than 6000 men would evenually serve in South Africa and fought on the veldt, and 230 of them lost their lives, most of them were mounted infantry. So too would a limited number of women as nurses and schoolteachers. Despite the strident jingoism that characterised the early stages of New Zealand's participation in the struggle against the Boers, not everybody supported the decision to send troops to South Africa. Some opposed it out of pacifist conviction, others because of doubts about the justice of the British cause, others again because of longstanding grevances against the British Empire unrelated to the war.
