London: John Murray, Date: 1860 Second edition, second issue (with "fifth thousand" on title page), one of only 3000 copies and yet the largest printing of any edition or issue in Darwin's lifetime, and the last English edition to contain the whale-bear story. Folding lithographed plate, 32pp. of publisher's advertisements at rear. Original publisher's green cloth, covers stamped in blind, gilt spine. About near fine, with just a touch of wear to spine ends, rear hinge faintly cracked but secure, binding slightly shaken at signatures in rear but sturdy overall, cloth bright and clean, interior with a bit of spotting but generally very clean and fresh, table at pp. 116-7 with a tear at fold. Overall, a superb copy in original cloth. Freeman 376. Darwin's On the Origin of Species is the basis for all of evolutionary biology. It includes evidence from Darwin's journey aboard the HMS Beagle, including data on the famous finches from the Galapagos Islands. First published in November 1859 with only 1,170 copies for sale, the book sold out in a single day. Just six weeks later, this second edition was printed, which contained many corrections and alterations. One of the biggest changes Darwin made was to a section on the hypothetical evolutionary relationship between whales and bears that had been misinterpreted by some and used to criticize the book and Darwin's theory. Darwin also made alterations to the book's conclusion to diffuse ...

London: John Murray, Date: 1892. Very good plus.. Sixth edition ("forty-third thousand") overall - and the first to use the term "evolution" to describe the mechanism of natural selection that Darwin introduced in the book. "Evolution" - the word now most associated with THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES - did not appear in the publication until the sixth edition. By then, Darwin was well aware that he had a phenomenon on his hands with the title - it was time to widen his audience. The 6th edition was purposefully set in smaller type, slimming the book's profile and making it more affordable ("I have been told on authority which I can trust that [...] workmen club together to buy the Origin," Darwin noted of previous editions in correspondence in 1871). It also contains a glossary for the first time, making the text more accessible to a non-specialist audience. Appropriately, this copy was once owned by James G. Mead, whale biologist and longtime curator of marine mammals at the Smithsonian. Mead is a particular proponent of the anatomical study of marine mammals, a method of examination that Darwin also favored; THE NEW YORK TIMES notes that Mead's use of this technique "has given scientists a detailed look at species that often can be observed only fleetingly in the wild." A notable edition of an iconic work. 7.5'' x 5''. Publisher's green cloth boards with gilt spine lettering. Of note is that "[t]he sketch of 1844 bears, on the whole a striking resemblance to the origin of species ... even some of the sentences are identical." [DNB, Vol. V (1917), p. 526] Darwin himself provides evidence of the high estimate he had formed of the sketch: "A letter exists, addressed to his wife, in which he made provision, in case of his death, for the publication of the manuscript ... stating that he believes his conclusions to be ‘a considerable step in science'" [ibid.]~~An attractive First Edition of this fore-runner of one of the most important books of the 19th century. New York: D. Appleton and Company, Date: 1889. Hardcover. Later printing, with additions and corrections from the sixth and last English edition. Arguably the most significant work of science in the Western canon, The Origin of Species first appeared in 1859, positing a theory of evolution in which living organisms change through a series of random permutations, which are 'naturally selected' insofar as they are adapted to their environment. Octavo, two volumes: xxvi, 365 p. + v, 339 p. with the publisher's ads at the rear. Original brown cloth binding, with gilt titles and black and blind-stamped decorations. Some sparse pencil marginalia, with erasures to the each front flyleaf. Bookplate and a small address label to each front pastedown. The spines are darkened just a touch, with some general shelfwear. 1889. D. Appleton and Company US

Octavo, original publisher's gilt-lettered green cloth (light corner wear, lightly bruised at head and foot of spine) original endpapers (lightly foxed); pp xxxii, 703, folding diagram. This is the fourth issue of the 'Popular Impression' first issued in November 1900, and so identified on Page [vi]. It is considered the definitive text for ...

Easily the most influential book published in the nineteenth century, Darwins The Origin of Species is also that most unusual phenomenon, an altogether readable discussion of a scientific subject. This 1839 account of the journeys to South America and the Pacific islands that first put Darwin on the track of his remarkable theories derives an added charm from his vivid description of his travels in exotic places and his eye for the piquant detail.
