ISBN10: 0671502484, ISBN13: 9780671502485, [publisher: Simon & Shuster, New York] Hardcover Second Printing, 1991 (Number line to 2). This book was previously owned by the renowned sociologist Daniel Bell. He signed his name on the first front end paper and he bracketed and parenthesized at the margin on 245 of the first 328 pages. Over the next 548 pages he made only a few margin markings. He also wrote a word or a few words at the margin of at least 25 pages, often at the top corner. And on the rear side of the blank rear end paper he penned seven sentences about the book. The book is in excellent shape. The covers are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright. The cover edges and corners look terrific. The page edges are quite clean, one tiny light spot on the middle edge and a very small group of accidental pen specks there as well. This 877 page book (before a 32 page Index) is square with a straight spine. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are in excellent condition, exceptionally clean. I didn't see any soiling at all. The inside covers and endpapers are very clean as well. The condition of the pages is very good. The only creasing I saw is quite minor, the bottom corner of a dozen consecutive pages in the Index has a very tiny and mild crease. There are no attachments of any kind in the book. There is no other writing other than Dr. Bell's. The book has a ...

The central strategic role of oil in both world wars - from the decisive 4-knot-per-hour advantage of oil-burning ships in World War I to Rommel's stalled tank advance at El Alamein in War II (he literally ran out of petrol) The underground battle to wind the greatest prize of all - the Saudi oil concession. The inside story of the discovery of North Sea Oil and its crucial role in undermining the OPEC monopoly. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
