Armorial bookplate of Hercules Rowley with the motto "Bear and Forbear." The book contains the 20-page preface by William Roscoe and 52 stipple engravings of famous Britons, each preceded by a one-page biography. The book seems to have been bound without a title page. The engravings are dated Date: 1809, 1810, 1811, 1812, 1813, 1814, 1815, 1816, 1817, and 1822. The engravings begin with King George III and Queen Charlotte, include notable figures from various fields, and are not in alphabetical order. Among the notables are William Pitt, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Joseph Banks, Joshua Reynolds, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, and William Cowper. Slight scuffing and edge wear, slight foxing, Very Good Plus. Nice condition. The British Gallery of Contemporary Portraits is one of the last major projects to use stipple engravings. Both volumes bound uniformly in full leather, with blind and gilt embossed decorations, five panelled spine with gilt decorations and lettering, richly gilded and gauffered text block edges, gilded inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. Vignettes on illustrated title pages. Bound by the Jersey bookbinder, C Le Fauvre, with his bookbinder's ticket on the front paste-down endpaper of each volume. Boards gently rubbed at edges, a little more harshly at spine tips and joints. Previous owner's inscription neatly on first blank leaf of each volume. Binding of first signature in each volume at little strained and one gutter cracked. In the first volume, which contains volumes I & II of the work, the title page to volume I is absent. In volume two, the front free endpaper and a few subsequent leaves have a mild corner crease. There's a some light spotting dotted throughout in each volume and hints of creaminess at page edges. Unpaginated. Together these volumes contain over 210 full page engravings, accompanied by selections related prose and poetry. Charles Heath was an engraver and early fellow of the RBA who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1825. He moved from engraving into art publishing in the late 1820s. Steel engravings. Some wear at the spine extremities and corners. Some light rubbing at board edges, and on the spine ties. A few tiny white speckles on the front board of V1, and some surface rubbing to the rear board of V2. Still, an attractive and well-bound set. Some light dampstaining in the fore-edge margins of the first and last several pages of V1. Dampstaining on the 1st plate and the fore-edge of the last several pages of V2. This dampstaining does not affect text or image except for the 1st plate of V2. Some foxing to the reverse of some of the plates, and just a bit in the margins of a few plates; none affecting the images. Else pages clean. This is an original set of the new gallery of British art containing 120 examples after British painters published in the mid to late 19th century by D Appleton and company. Each of the 40 parts has three steel engravings on fine imperial quarto paper with accompanying letter-press descriptions. I have gone through each part and made sure that all parts are present. Some maybe Miss A line or slightly out of order with the tissue papers and descriptions but all are complete and present. There is one singular engraving that I could not find and that is titled "novitiate mendicants". It is possible it is present but I wasn't going to search through for a 3rd time to see. Includes the original title page engraving and weirdly, a few pages that seem to be from what should be a bound copy. They were randomly placed in part 33. They have significant foxing and staining to the edges but the vast majority of engravings are clean.The imperfections affect only the edges of the papers on the vast majority. At your request I can take a picture of any singular engraving or part. All of the original covers are present. Most all of them are ripped on the spine but clean on ghe front and back. One part has its rear cover ripped but is still complete. Also comes with a few blank pages of the Imperial quarto paper which are significantly stained and I assume were added for end papers or something.&nbs ...

Full brown morocco leather bound cover with 5 raised bands, gilt stamping, and embossed decor is worn at extremities and frayed at corners but clean, bright, and in good+ condition. Leather has been treated with professional leather cover preservation treatment to stop and prevent deterioration. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Marbled end sheets and paste downs clean and vibrant. Frontispieces and plates throughout protected by tissue with only a hint of toning and no foxing and very sparse, modest soiling from handling. However, first 20 pages have an old faint damp stain in the lower margin along the bottom and side of the pages (not affecting the text and engraved areas) becoming only a small faint damp stain in the bottom margin of the rest of the pages.
